Fi1m perspective

Rosamund Pike can make an insult funny without letting her character in on the joke. We rate her control of a pause and a wandering glance, though her quieter work deserves as much attention as the villains.

In Saltburn (2023), Rosamund Pike's Elspeth Catton lets her gaze drift away before she has finished insulting someone. The woman has already lost interest in the person she is hurting. We laughed at that dinner table because Pike plays the rudeness without once admitting that Elspeth is a joke. Emerald Fennell's film mistakes rudeness for satire, but the family scenes are worth watching for her.

The early parts gave her rather different jobs, from Miranda Frost in Die Another Day (2002) to Jane Bennet in Joe Wright's Pride & Prejudice (2005). As Jane, she supplies a quiet presence in an adaptation whose broader comedy can become wearing. Beside Brenda Blethyn's fussing Mrs Bennet, that restraint is useful. It is worth remembering when the larger comic performances threaten to define what we expect from her.

The major turn came with Amy Dunne in Gone Girl (2014), the breakthrough that moved her towards leading roles. I Care a Lot (2021) gave her Marla Grayson, a ruthless con artist. Her coolness suits such calculating characters, and helps explain why these parts have become so prominent in her work. It would be a waste if they were the only ones she were offered.

Ruben Fleischer's Now You See Me: Now You Don't (2025) gives her Veronika Vanderberg, a wealthy villain whom she plays with conspicuous enjoyment. She smiles through threats and holds pauses a beat longer than everyone else, treating the Horsemen as an inconvenience. Sophie Canale's sharp tailoring suits a performance so certain of its own authority. The acting is large, deliberately so, and exposes how little the rest of the cast has been given to do.

There is a limit to how much that can repair. Fleischer's film explains each illusion as soon as it is over, leaving Pike to provide much of the entertainment. We would start with Pride & Prejudice, where her quieter work has a better film around it.
