Fi1m perspective

Sam Mendes gets strong work from actors and gives their surroundings close attention. We like his patience with unhappy people, but his polished images can make a thin screenplay look more thoughtful than it is.

In American Beauty (1999), the respectable suburban home feels stifling before the dialogue needs to explain it. Sam Mendes is attentive to the people living there, even when they behave badly. We laughed at Kevin Spacey’s Lester Burnham because he makes self-absorption so companionable. Mendes is worth watching for that generosity towards his characters, and for the performances it allows.

His film debut is also a useful introduction to his limitations. Alan Ball’s screenplay treats familiar complaints about middle-class life as discoveries and makes conformity explain too much. Mendes does not always keep enough distance from Lester, whose charm can make self-pity seem justified. Yet the performances, especially Annette Bening’s, keep the film funny and worth watching when the observations grow obvious.

With Road to Perdition (2002), he took his interest in troubled families into a gangster story about a father and son. The later move to the Bond films Skyfall (2012) and Spectre (2015) carried his preference for precise compositions into franchise filmmaking. The war film 1917 (2019) made his technical ambition particularly conspicuous through its single-take style. Empire of Light (2022), which he wrote and directed, brought him back to more personal material.

In American Beauty, cinematographer Conrad Hall gives suburbia a controlled polish, while production designer Naomi Shohan makes the home feel oppressive without relying on dialogue. Hall also worked with Mendes on Road to Perdition; Roger Deakins is another regular cinematographer. These collaborations suit a director who puts considerable trust in what the image can tell us. The difficulty is visible in American Beauty, where that polish sometimes holds the characters’ unhappiness at a distance.

For all the control, we are most interested in the moments when an actor complicates our response to someone. Lester’s entertaining self-absorption is a better reason to return to American Beauty than its account of suburban life. Start there for Bening and the sour humour, and allow for a screenplay rather pleased with its own observations.
