Biography

Samuel Goldwyn (born Szmuel Gelbfisz) was a Polish-born American film producer. He began in the glove trade before entering the motion picture industry, co-founding the Jesse L. Lasky Feature Play Company in 1913 and later Goldwyn Pictures Corporation in 1916. After the latter merged into Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1924, he established Samuel Goldwyn Productions as an independent operation.

Goldwyn produced numerous notable films, including Wuthering Heights (1939), The Little Foxes (1941), The Pride of the Yankees (1942), The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) and Guys and Dolls (1955). He worked frequently with director William Wyler and distributed many releases through United Artists. He received the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award in 1947 and died in Los Angeles in 1974.
