Fi1m perspective

Sandra Hüller makes thinking and working absorbing to watch, without asking us to like the woman doing either. We rate her highly, especially with directors who let a face remain difficult to read.

In Toni Erdmann (2016), Sandra Hüller's Ines has work to do and a father who will not let her get on with it. Hüller makes us watch Ines concentrating, trying to establish whether her impatience comes from the job or the interruption. Maren Ade takes that job seriously, while Peter Simonischek makes the father's interference affectionate enough to complicate our irritation. We laughed, then felt protective of Ines, because she had to carry on working through the embarrassment he caused. Hüller lets us understand why Ines is angry without making her father merely a nuisance.

Her early work in Requiem (2006) drew on physical intensity; the international breakthrough came with Ade's comedy. In Anatomy of a Fall (2023), Justine Triet builds a courtroom drama around our inability to read her. Her novelist, Sandra Voyter, speaks English at home but must use imperfect French in court, where each hesitation counts against her. Hüller does not arrange her face to reassure us that Sandra is grieving properly, or that we should believe her. Triet gives her time to remain difficult, although the film could lose ten minutes without damaging that performance.

Jonathan Glazer asks something colder of her in The Zone of Interest (2023). As Hedwig Höss, she has a garden, a greenhouse, servants and a fur coat, and is pleased with what she has. Hüller plays that pleasure without softening it or pausing to signal her own disapproval. The house and garden stay on screen while the camp is heard beyond them. Her settled happiness is horrible to watch; Glazer needs no sinister mannerism from her to make the domestic scenes frightening.

The smaller part of Eva Stratt in Project Hail Mary (2026) gives her authority and too little else. She is good company as the woman assembling a mission to investigate the dimming sun, having long since stopped apologising. Yet Joel Negron's repeated cuts to Earth turn her scenes into information the film needs to deliver, and interrupt its warmer pleasures. Stratt's use of power deserves more attention than the film gives it. Start with Toni Erdmann or Anatomy of a Fall; save the space mission for an evening when she need not be the main attraction.
