Fi1m perspective

Sid Haig could make a villain funny without making him safe. We value that awkward humour, and the character work beyond Captain Spaulding, even if a career spent playing heavies gave him too few chances to do something else.

Sid Haig's height, bald head and beard made him easy to cast as trouble. Too easy, judging by the villains and henchmen that kept coming his way in films and television. The more interesting quality was his ability to let humour into the threat. We rate him as a character actor who deserved more variety in the parts, rather than more of the same with extra screen time.

Jack Hill's Spider Baby (1967) gave him Ralph; Coffy (1973) cast him as Omar alongside Pam Grier. Hill was a recurring collaborator through Haig's exploitation work, but television also kept employing him as a heavy. Frustration with typecasting led him to retire in 1992. The return came through an unusually deliberate piece of casting.

Quentin Tarantino wrote the judge in Jackie Brown (1997) for Haig, bringing him back to acting. It is a welcome change of job from henchman, though the film's richest scenes belong to Grier and Robert Forster. We would not make Haig the main reason to see it: Tarantino's willingness to slow down and listen is the larger pleasure. The film runs a good half-hour too long, but we recommend it warmly.

Rob Zombie's House of 1000 Corpses (2003) made Captain Spaulding the part that revived Haig's career. We laughed at the clown and felt uneasy about it, because Haig kept him threatening even when he was funny. He returned to the character in The Devil's Rejects (2005).

Bone Tomahawk (2015) gives him the supporting role of Buddy, a useful reminder that he could register without a film being built around him. The cast makes the horror count, and the dark humour helps, though the journey drags. This is where we would send anyone curious about the character actor beyond the clown. Take the warning about graphic violence seriously.

Biography

Sid Haig was an American character actor whose career spanned six decades. Born Sidney Eddie Mosesian in Fresno, California, he trained at the Pasadena Playhouse and began acting in the 1960s after early work as a drummer. He appeared frequently in films directed by Jack Hill, including Spider Baby (1967), and in blaxploitation pictures such as Coffy (1973) and Foxy Brown (1974). Other credits include THX 1138 (1971) and Diamonds Are Forever (1971), as well as numerous television series.

Quentin Tarantino wrote the role of the judge specifically for Haig in Jackie Brown (1997). He later gained a cult following for portraying Captain Spaulding in Rob Zombie’s House of 1000 Corpses (2003), The Devil’s Rejects (2005) and 3 from Hell (2019). Haig died on 21 September 2019.
