Steven Mackintosh makes supporting characters register quickly, especially in busy crime ensembles. We value that economy, but Care makes the case for giving him more to do than helping a crowded film keep moving.
Fi1m perspective
Winston, the head chemist in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998), has to register among a crowd of competing characters. Steven Mackintosh is well suited to Guy Ritchie's approach, making a quick impression while the plans become more tangled. We laughed at those complications, helped by casting sharp enough to make thinly written people worth following. The camera tricks grow tiresome, and there is a limit to what even apt casting can do for such slight characters. It is a good place to meet him, provided the caper is what you have come for.
The earlier The Storyteller (1988) places him in Jim Henson's folk-tale television, playing Lucky. John Hurt's narration and the elaborate puppetry make this absorbing, sometimes unsettling family television. The solemn tone can make short tales feel heavy, but the care in the telling rewards attention. Mackintosh belongs to that wider world of character acting, and treating him simply as a crime-film face misses too much. His physical and vocal transformation as Kim Foyle in Different for Girls (1996) makes the point more directly.
Care (2000) offers a substantial television lead: Davy Younger, the damaged protagonist in Antonia Bird's drama. It gives his intensity and emotional depth room to matter beyond a quick introduction. Bird, who has directed him in three films, is an important collaborator to follow. The career after Lock, Stock has leaned towards character and supporting work, with parts including detective Ian Reed in Luther (2010) and Stanley in Rocketman (2019).
Mackintosh has explained his decision to avoid more of the same crime-film work: "There were so many bad scripts around at that time that involved London, gangs and geezers... I decided to go in the opposite direction." We can respect that choice without assuming that every smaller part will be rewarding. We would still welcome more roles with the space Bird gave him. Give Care an evening if Winston is all you know of him.
