Fi1m perspective

Temuera Morrison makes physical authority convincing, whether it is frightening or reassuring. We rate him, but want more substantial parts: the fathers in Moana 2 and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom give him too little to do.

In Once Were Warriors (1994), Temuera Morrison gives Jake Heke a physical presence that makes the family's fear credible. Lee Tamahori's drama needs that threat, but Rena Owen keeps our attention from settling entirely on the man who supplies it. Their performances work together because his force does not become the only thing worth watching. The children matter, too, because their presence makes the cost of the adults' behaviour plain. We rate his performance highly, even when the film piles on more misery than it needs.

That breakthrough was followed by Hollywood supporting roles from the mid-1990s. He played Jango Fett in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002), then Boba Fett in The Book of Boba Fett (2021–2022). Those roles fit an actor so often cast for his physical authority. The quieter fathers in his later work interest us because they give him something to do besides make other people wary.

In Moana 2 (2024), Morrison voices Chief Tui, with Nicole Scherzinger alongside him as Moana's other parent. During the early beach farewell, little sister Simea does not want Moana to leave, and the parents stand back. We were moved more than we expected because the scene allows that small family separation to matter without adding anything magical. Morrison does not carry the scene, and it would be generous to pretend he does. There is value, though, in a supporting performance that lets the sisters have our attention.

James Wan's Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023) gives his Tom a more practical task: doing the night feeds while Jason Momoa's Arthur divides his time between fatherhood and being King of Atlantis. The lighthouse scenes offer a recognisable household before the plot becomes hard to follow. Morrison supplies a useful domestic presence, but the part gives us little to discuss beyond it. We would not recommend the film on the strength of his contribution.

We would welcome another substantial dramatic part rather than another reminder that he can lend authority to a small one. Start with Once Were Warriors, with a firm warning about the domestic violence and some patience for its excesses. Leave it for an evening when nobody needs cheering up.
