Fi1m perspective

Tramell Tillman makes courtesy unsettling without making a show of the threat. We rate the precision of his speech and movement, and would like his film roles to give him as much to do as Severance does.

As Seth Milchick in Severance (2022), Tramell Tillman is polite in a way that does not put us at ease. His speech is precise and his movements carefully controlled, with menace just beneath the good manners. He is a fine actor of institutional authority, making the person in charge worth watching even when that person is trying to appear entirely reasonable. We rate him for how much he can suggest without abandoning that professional manner.

Small television roles and theatre preceded Milchick, his breakthrough part, but the useful preparation here was also work outside acting. Tillman has drawn on his experience in corporate and nonprofit management, building the character partly from former colleagues and bosses. That helps explain the particular discomfort: the supervisor's courteous manner is recognisable before the menace underneath it becomes apparent. This does not excuse the programme's slow first season, but it gives us someone worth attending to while it gathers pace.

Christopher McQuarrie's Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (2025) gives him a briefer opportunity as Captain Bledsoe, commanding a submarine. Tillman handles the naval jargon as settled professional knowledge, and the authority feels earned rather than announced. We found ourselves wishing we could stay with Bledsoe, because his ease with the job was more engaging than the explanations surrounding him. That is praise for the performance, not an unqualified recommendation of the film: too much of it is spent telling us what is happening. McQuarrie gets an assured supporting turn; we wanted a larger one.

The move from Milchick to Bledsoe, followed by William 'Bill' Metzger in Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026), has brought larger film parts. We would be cautious about treating that progression as proof of more interesting work. The danger is easy to see: casting departments could keep finding him offices and uniforms, then leave him to supply the character himself. Start with Severance, and hope the next film offers him something beyond another person to supervise.
