Fi1m perspective

Tyrin Turner gives Menace II Society a lead worth watching closely: reserved, difficult to read and never made easy to excuse. We rate that performance highly, even when the film hurries past what he suggests.

In Menace II Society (1993), Tyrin Turner keeps Caine ‘Kaydee’ Lawson difficult to read, even as the film presses us to understand how he became this way. He does not supply a clear explanation for every response. Alongside him, Larenz Tate makes Kevin ‘O-Dog’ dangerous with the eagerness of someone still showing off, while Turner gives us fewer immediate clues. We found Caine unsettling because his reserve suggests feelings he has little capacity to examine. Turner gives us good reason to keep watching him without asking us to excuse him.

An early part in Deep Cover (1992) preceded that breakthrough, but the lead in Menace II Society did not bring a steady succession of comparable opportunities. Panther (1995) and Belly (1998), in which he played Big Head Rico, followed. Later supporting work includes Fatale (2020), alongside television appearances in black-ish and Alert: Missing Persons Unit (2023). There is work behind the scenes too, writing comedy material for Jamie Foxx and producing on Alert.

Allen and Albert Hughes get something valuable from Turner's restraint, though they do not always give it enough space. Tyger Williams’s screenplay puts Caine’s behaviour in the context of aggression learned early, with Brandon Hammond playing him at five. That helps explain why so many responses seem practised before the older Caine has considered them. The difficulty is the repeated insistence that violence will continue: the point can be clear well before the film stops making it. We wanted longer with the feelings Turner suggests, rather than another demonstration of what surrounds him.

Our reservation is with that hurry, not with a lead who declines to explain himself on cue. However insistently the script explains where their aggression comes from, Turner and Tate keep us looking at two distinct people. For Turner, begin with Menace II Society, and do not expect an easy evening.
