Fi1m perspective

Walton Goggins makes dangerous men funny without making them safe. His drawl and appetite for dialogue are familiar, but the pleasure is in never quite knowing how far a character will go.

In The Hateful Eight (2015), Walton Goggins plays a man who says he is the new sheriff and talks as though nobody else needs a turn. Chris Mannix's speech keeps outrunning his judgement, and Goggins lets us hear the stupidity without losing the danger. We laughed at Mannix because he keeps saying more than is good for him. Quentin Tarantino gives Goggins room to be funny, though the film's 188 minutes give everyone rather more room than they need.

Early casting often reduced that Southern drawl to a stereotype. Television gave him more to work with as the corrupt policeman Shane Vendrell in The Shield (2002–2008). Then came the articulate criminal Boyd Crowder in Justified (2010–2015), a pilot villain whose part expanded to series co-lead. These longer parts suited his ability to make unpleasant people worth caring about.

His work for Tarantino began with Billy Crash in Django Unchained (2012); Mannix was the larger assignment. The director's appetite for talk suits an actor who can make a speech sound like a man getting carried away with himself. Yet The Hateful Eight also shows the limit of what that pleasure can sustain. Goggins is worth watching, but he cannot make the film's prolonged cruelty less wearing.

The move into broader comedy brought him alongside Danny McBride. He played Lee Russell in Vice Principals (2016–2017) and Baby Billy Freeman in The Righteous Gemstones (2019–2025). We can see the appeal of casting him in broad comedy after Mannix, though the humanity he finds in unpleasant characters interests us more than the eccentricity.

Fallout (2024) makes particularly good use of him as the Ghoul. He gives the nastier jokes confidence and makes encounters harder to predict, while Ella Purnell's Lucy MacLean ensures the violence still has a cost. The wandering plot can test the interest that both actors have earned, but their performances make the slower passages worth tolerating. Start there if gore and comedy appeal, and allow for the occasional stretch when the cast is more interesting than what it has been given to do.
