Fi1m perspective

Will Patton makes authority and menace feel personal, with a Southern drawl and a physical intensity that need little emphasis. We value him most when a film gives him something to play beyond toughness.

Will Patton's Southern drawl and physical intensity make authority come easily, but we find him more interesting when toughness is only the start of the part. He can make an antagonistic figure seem to have reasons of his own, rather than simply a job to do for the plot. His supporting film work took hold in the mid-1980s, with Horst in Martin Scorsese's After Hours (1985) among the early roles. That unnerving comedy is worth returning to for its performances and restless camera, though the women are sometimes given little purpose beyond frightening Griffin Dunne.

Scott Pritchard, the obsessive aide he plays opposite Gene Hackman and Kevin Costner in No Way Out (1987), shows how useful that attention to motivation can be. By Armageddon (1998), Patton was firmly established in studio supporting roles, playing the loyal oil-rig worker Chick for Michael Bay. We enjoyed the cast's company, but the frantic cutting and laboured tenderness wore us down. Chick gives Patton loyalty to play, a useful distinction in a film whose pleasures depend so much on the people enduring its foolishness. At 151 minutes, it asks too much of them.

The restriction is the repeated invitation to play another tough man or authority figure. Coach Bill Yoast in Remember the Titans (2000), opposite Denzel Washington, belongs to the run of ensemble work that made him so dependable a supporting presence. Dependable can become an excuse for giving an actor familiar things to do, and we would rather see him asked for something less comfortable. The later work takes in independent film with Paul in Minari (2020), alongside recurring television parts in Falling Skies and Silo.

Patton has expressed a wish to play more fragile characters, and we would welcome that shift. His audiobook narration is another reason to be interested in what he might do when a role relies less on physical intensity. The drawl is recognisable enough; it need not always introduce a threat. Start with After Hours for the film, then No Way Out for a supporting part that gives him more to work with.
