Wyatt Russell makes physically capable men seem unsure of what to do with themselves. We value that unsettled quality, especially in horror, and would rather see a story depend on him than employ him at its edges.
Fi1m perspective
Russell looks physically equipped for trouble, which makes the uncertainty in his characters worth watching. In ‘Playtest’ (2016), his episode of Black Mirror, he carries a contained horror story as Cooper Redfield. Working with Dan Trachtenberg gives him room to hold our attention rather than make an impression between other people’s scenes. It is the sort of assignment we want more of for him. We recommend Black Mirror for performances that make the distress matter, with the caveat that the programme sometimes keeps tormenting its characters after we have understood the point.
The move from supporting parts, including 22 Jump Street (2014), to the lead in Lodge 49 (2018–2019) gave him a longer stretch in which to establish a character. His Sean ‘Dud’ Dudley is a laid-back seeker, a part that let him carry an ensemble programme for 20 episodes. It is a welcome alternative to the demands of Overlord (2018), a Second World War horror film in which his Corporal Lewis Ford is a co-lead.
John Walker in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021) gives that physical assurance a less comfortable use. A flawed successor to Captain America is a sensible part for Russell: being capable does not tell us whether a man should be trusted. He returned to Walker in Thunderbolts\* (2025). The recurring role makes use of his athleticism, though we would not want it to become the only reason to cast him.
The limitation of a smaller assignment is apparent in Spielberg’s Disclosure Day (2026), where his Jackson works around the edges of the hunt. We were frustrated by how long that second-hand mystery kept everyone running. Emily Blunt makes Margaret’s embarrassment at her strange abilities funny and then frightening, and the film gives her space to do it. Russell’s smaller assignment gives us little reason to revise our view of him. For a clearer look at what he can do, start with ‘Playtest’.
