Fi1m perspective

Zhang Fengyi's physical assurance makes him a natural choice for men in authority. We value him most in Farewell My Concubine, where his restraint makes a difficult partnership hurt without making either man easy to dismiss.

In Farewell My Concubine (1993), Zhang Fengyi's Duan Xiaolou treats his partnership with Leslie Cheung's Cheng Dieyi as one part of his life. For Dieyi, it is harder to draw that boundary. Zhang does not play the difference as simple indifference, nor offer a reassuring suggestion that the two men want the same thing. He gives Cheung someone to react to, with feelings that do not conveniently bend to suit the more openly troubled character.

His breakthrough lead in Rickshaw Boy (1982) came before the international recognition of Farewell My Concubine. The later career has made frequent use of his physical authority and contained delivery, particularly in historical roles. He played Jing Ke in Chen Kaige's The Emperor and the Assassin (1998), then Cao Cao in John Woo's Red Cliff (2008). That casting makes sense, though it can encourage us to notice the man's position before we notice what Zhang is doing.

With Xiaolou, there is less temptation to stop at an impression of strength. We were hurt by his scenes with Dieyi because Zhang makes Xiaolou's feelings matter without pretending they answer his partner's needs. Cheung gives the film's troubled relationships their force, but Zhang's response is essential: he allows us to understand how these two men can want different things from their closeness. He is generous to Cheung without agreeing to make his own character simpler.

Chen does not get everything right in Farewell My Concubine: the plotting sometimes pushes too hard. The actors give us enough reason to accept that excess, though Zhang's contribution is easy to undervalue beside the more consuming attachment Cheung has to play. We would look for more parts that give his reserve this much to do, rather than assuming another authoritative figure will be enough. Start with Farewell My Concubine, and pay attention to the man who seems to be coping.
