Fi1m perspective

Ann Dowd makes authority frightening by keeping it ordinary. We rate her highly for the small changes in attention and tone that make controlling women complicated, even when the writing around them is blunt.

In The Testaments (2026), Ann Dowd's Aunt Lydia watches the girls when they believe themselves unobserved. Dowd lets a little of Lydia's past show in that attention, without making a plea for forgiveness. We found her unsettling because even this private interest feels measured against what Lydia can afford to reveal. Her restraint gives us something to study whenever she is on screen. We rate her highly for making a controlling woman complicated without softening the control.

Compliance (2012), in which she played Sandra, brought a breakthrough after decades of supporting work. The television parts that followed made authority central: cult leader Patti Levin in The Leftovers (2014–2017), then Aunt Lydia in The Handmaid's Tale (2017–2025). That succession helps explain why we now watch her so closely for a threat. It also risks narrowing what we expect from her before she has said a word. Linda in Mass (2021), a grieving parental role, is a useful reminder that her skill with troubled people need not depend on their power over others.

David Gordon Green's The Exorcist: Believer (2023) gives her Nurse Ann Brooks, the neighbour who first names possession. Dowd says it with the matter-of-fact confidence of a diagnosis, making an unlikely explanation sound like the next practical thing to consider. The film begins quietly enough to benefit from that approach, then gives way to shouting and explanation. It is a poor film with worthwhile acting, and Dowd's presence cannot excuse its failure to stay frightening. She supplies the calm conviction that the film badly needs once it starts raising its voice.

In The Testaments, adapted by Bruce Miller with Stuti Malhotra and other writers, she has a fuller past to work with than the earlier programme supplied. Having played Lydia since 2017, Dowd knows how little she needs to disclose at once. The writing is less economical: ten episodes stretch a good story past its useful length, and familiar world-building takes time away from the people we want to watch. She is reason enough to stay with the programme, though we would not blame anyone for wishing it shorter.
