Fi1m perspective

Anthony Wong Chau-Sang is especially good at giving dangerous men recognisable human motives. We value his intensity and the attention he pays to flawed characters, though his name in the credits is no guarantee of a good film.

In Hard Boiled (1992), Anthony Wong Chau-Sang plays Johnny Wong, a ruthless triad leader opposite Chow Yun-fat. It is the sort of assignment that can reduce an actor to providing reasons for the next gunfight. Wong’s particular strength is making extreme characters seem human without softening their behaviour. That makes him worth watching even when there is little reason to like the person he plays.

John Woo’s film also supplies a useful warning against confusing effective casting with a strong script. Its story is thin, and even precisely staged violence can become tiring. We were exhilarated by the gunfights because Woo keeps the action legible and allows reckless humour into the shooting. Wong’s villain operates within a busy action film whose leads’ chemistry accounts for much of its pleasure. It is a good introduction to him, with some obvious limits.

His breakthrough continued with The Untold Story (1993), playing the serial killer Wong Chi-hang. That performance helped establish his reputation for unsettling intensity, while Beast Cops (1998) gave him Tung, a corrupt police officer. By Infernal Affairs (2002), in which he plays Wong Chi Shing, supporting roles in Hong Kong genre films were an established part of his work. These are different assignments, though an account that stops there makes him sound confined to the crime section.

His collaborators include directors Johnnie To and Herman Yau, both of whom have worked with him repeatedly. The title role in Ip Man: The Final Fight (2013) required preparation for martial arts performance, while the later drama Still Human (2018) belongs in any account of his work beyond crime films. Neither needs to be treated as a surprising departure simply because the threatening men are easier to remember. His ability to give flawed characters human detail is useful well beyond villainy.

We would not recommend choosing indiscriminately from his filmography. His prolific early film work included poor material, and an actor’s willingness to keep working is not a reason to follow him everywhere. Start with Hard Boiled for the action, but leave room for the work in which nobody needs him to be frightening.
