Fi1m perspective

Archie Panjabi makes supporting characters feel entitled to an opinion. We value her work in ensembles, from the argumentative family of East Is East to the resourceful professionals who have become her television speciality.

Meenah Khan is one more person with an opinion in East Is East (1999), and Archie Panjabi makes that matter. In Damien O’Donnell’s family comedy, she and Jimi Mistry’s Tariq help make the household feel full of competing opinions. We were moved by the family arguments, because Linda Bassett makes Ella’s affection so visibly hard work. Panjabi contributes to the impression that each person deserves a hearing, however crowded the conversation becomes. The humour can grow too broad, but the actors keep the family believable.

Her early film work established her in supporting parts: Pinky Bhamra in Bend It Like Beckham (2002), then Ghita Pearson in The Constant Gardener (2005). The latter, directed by Fernando Meirelles, is a persuasive, troubling thriller, with Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz supplying much of its feeling. We recommend it, with a reservation about how little attention its African characters receive. It is worth distinguishing between a strong film containing Panjabi and a substantial opportunity to judge her acting; Meenah gives us more to discuss than Ghita.

Television gave her a more defining part in Kalinda Sharma, the investigator she played in The Good Wife (2009–2015). This brought wider recognition and established her association with sharp, resourceful professional women. The appeal of such a supporting character is clear: someone with priorities of her own can complicate a procedural without needing to take over its central story. Kalinda’s independence makes her a useful part through which to consider Panjabi, rather than treating the better-known films around her as the measure of her work.

Further work in series including Departure and Hijack has kept television central to her career. The danger in that speciality is repetition: a woman who can solve the problem still needs something to do beyond demonstrating competence. What we value in Meenah is how much she contributes to our sense of the whole family, despite sharing the film with so many others. Begin with East Is East for that ensemble, allowing for the film’s uneven handling of domestic violence.
