Fi1m perspective

Brendan Gleeson can make a father's patience convincing with scarcely a movement, or make a joke feel like a warning. We rate his stillness and his comic timing; too many smaller parts rely on him to supply what the writing has left out.

In Joker: Folie à Deux (2024), Brendan Gleeson's Jackie Sullivan runs the wing with jokes and shoulder-claps. He makes us wary of the friendliness: the jokes sound as though they could turn ugly without warning. There is no need for a separate display of menace when he can make ordinary sociability carry it. Todd Phillips's film has plenty wrong with it, but Gleeson gives this stretch a credible reason for unease.

His international breakthrough as Hamish in Braveheart (1995) was followed by a leading role in The General (1998). Martin McDonagh gave him Ken, the hitman mentor in In Bruges (2008), with room for comedy and tenderness as well as threat. John Michael McDonagh's Calvary (2014) put his quiet authority at the centre as Father James Lavelle. The Banshees of Inisherin (2022) brought him back to Martin McDonagh, but a leading part has never been essential to his effectiveness.

H Is for Hawk (2025) needs him for only a handful of scenes as Helen's father. We were moved more than we expected by the two of them waiting in a field, because he takes the child's curiosity seriously without making a performance of being a good father. Director Philippa Lowthorpe lets him do almost nothing, and that is enough. Editor Nico Leunen returns to the flashbacks so often, however, that the film starts insisting on a feeling Gleeson has already earned.

In the series Spider-Noir (2026), his Silvermane is the only villain who seems to want something. Gleeson gives the small part enough weight that we notice how little the other villains have been given to do. The surrounding cast is also better than the material, and eight episodes stretch what would have worked better in six.

His American accent in State of the Union (2022) can sound effortful. We would start with In Bruges, where the comedy and the threat both have room to develop. His smaller parts are worth seeking out, but not indiscriminately. When his name is the chief attraction, check how much of the evening will be spent waiting for him to return.
