Fi1m perspective

Cailee Spaeny stays small in the frame and does little with her face, and what she does is show other people acting on her. In Priscilla that carries the film; elsewhere she has mostly been the apprentice, and she is better than the parts.

Elvis looks at a dress with a print on it, says mildly that it does not suit her, and picks another. Cailee Spaeny, as Priscilla, plays her as pleased. That is what she does that other young actors do not: she lets somebody else change her and shows us the change landing, without a flicker of protest to reassure us. Philippe Le Sourd shoots her small in wide rooms and she stays small; when Jacob Elordi's Elvis walks in he takes most of the frame and she lets him. We watched her be pleased and felt cold, because nothing in her face was asking us to worry.

She has been at this longer than her age suggests. She left school at thirteen to act, and her first sizeable film part was Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018), a studio machine that needed a wide-eyed junior and got one. Television gave her more to do. In Alex Garland's Devs (2020) she plays Lyndon, an engineer who is cleverer than everyone on the campus and cannot stop saying so, and she and Stephen McKinley Henderson are the pleasure of the middle hours. Mare of Easttown (2021) followed. Then Sofia Coppola cast her in Priscilla (2023), from fourteen to a married woman, and the part made sense of everything before it.

Since then she has been busy and somewhat under-used. Garland brought her back for Civil War (2024) as Jessie, the apprentice photographer beside Kirsten Dunst, and she plays the hardening cleanly even where the script draws it in straight lines. In Fede Álvarez's Alien: Romulus (2024) she is Rain, watchful and unfussy, and she does panic well, which matters more on that station than heroics; still, David Jonsson's synthetic gets the film's one real question and she gets the running. Rian Johnson's Wake Up Dead Man (2025) puts her in a pew with half a dozen other well-known actors and leaves her there.

The pattern is plain. Directors who like atmosphere and silence keep hiring her, because she can hold a frame without filling it, and then they hand the arc to someone else. Garland twice, Álvarez, Johnson: she is the junior, the apprentice, the one being taught. Coppola is the only one so far who has built a film on what happens to her face over an hour and a half, and Priscilla is the one we would send a stranger to. She is worth watching in all of them. She is still waiting for the second director to notice what the first one saw.
