Carrie Coon’s low voice and firm presence make authority look easy. We rate her highly when the writing gives her grief or ambition to work through; Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire shows what happens when it gives her too little.
Fi1m perspective
In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024), Carrie Coon’s Callie Spengler is given a lecture to deliver and little else. That is a particularly poor use of an actor whose low voice and physical assurance can suggest intelligence without much help from the dialogue. We want to know what a woman played by Coon thinks, especially when she is grieving or trying to get her own way. Here, there is barely time to find out before someone else needs to explain the plot.
The Leftovers (2014–2017) made that interest worth following, with Coon as Nora Durst, a woman who lost her family in the Sudden Departure. It is the clearest starting point for her ability to make grief and resilience convincing together. Her film debut, as Margo Dunne in David Fincher’s Gone Girl (2014), was a supporting part. Fargo (2017) brought Gloria Burgle, a determined police chief in its third series.
In Julian Fellowes’s The Gilded Age (2022), she plays Bertha Russell, an ambitious new-money matriarch, alongside Morgan Spector. Ambition gives her firmness another use: here is someone with reason to insist on being heard. The danger is that casting her as an authoritative woman can become an excuse not to write one properly. Frozen Empire provides the caution.
Gil Kenan’s film keeps interrupting the Spenglers so the old team can return, while six competing strands demand further explanation. Callie is part of the family we should be getting to know, yet the writing gives her so little room that Coon has almost nothing to develop. We were irritated when the demon’s history was explained for a second time, while Callie had been given so little to do. We would sooner watch her work through Nora’s grief than deliver another lecture; start with The Leftovers.
