Fi1m perspective

Finn Wolfhard can make a young character's earnestness almost painful, and we mean that as praise. We rate him as an ensemble actor, though Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire gives him little chance to show why.

Mike Wheeler is almost painfully earnest beside the other boys in Stranger Things (2016). Gaten Matarazzo's Dustin is funny on purpose and Caleb McLaughlin's Lucas asks the sensible questions, leaving Wolfhard to supply the uncomfortable seriousness. We found Mike's earnestness touching, because Wolfhard lets the group's loyal leader be awkward. It is a useful quality in an ensemble: he need not be the person getting the laughs to be worth watching.

The series was his breakthrough, and it remains the clearest reason to rate him. Its first eight episodes give the young cast a well-built small-town horror story, with Millie Bobby Brown's Eleven at the centre. Wolfhard does not have to dominate that company to make his part count. The later runs grow bigger, but the early balance of personalities is what we would go back for.

His prominent film roles kept him among young people confronting the supernatural: Richie Tozier, the foul-mouthed member of the Losers' Club in It (2017), then Trevor Spengler in Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021). The repeated casting makes sense for an actor whose strengths include responding to a group. But there is little he can do when the group becomes too crowded. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024) is the caution here.

Gil Kenan leaves Trevor chasing a familiar green ghost around an attic while the film attends to its many other strands. Carrie Coon's Callie has little beyond a lecture to deliver, so this is hardly a problem confined to Wolfhard. There is no fair test of his abilities in such thin material. We would not recommend the film for him, and we would not use it to dismiss him either.

With Hell of a Summer (2025), a horror-comedy he co-directed and co-wrote with Billy Bryk and also acted in, he begins taking responsibility for the material himself. He stays with horror, now helping to decide what the actors have to work with. Start with the first eight episodes of Stranger Things. For his next substantial acting part, a character with more to do than pursue a ghost would be welcome.
