Biography

Daniel Mandell (1895–1987) was an American film editor whose career spanned more than four decades. He began in vaudeville and the circus as an acrobat before serving in the US Marines during the First World War. After the war he entered film editing, working initially at MGM and Columbia before joining Samuel Goldwyn Productions.

Mandell edited many of Goldwyn’s prestige pictures, including Wuthering Heights (1939), The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) and Guys and Dolls (1955). He later collaborated with Billy Wilder on five films, among them Witness for the Prosecution (1957), The Apartment (1960) and The Fortune Cookie (1966). He won three Academy Awards for Best Film Editing—for The Pride of the Yankees (1942), The Best Years of Our Lives and The Apartment—and received two further nominations.
