Fi1m perspective

Striesow is the man in the good coat who makes the state look reasonable: a general eating well, a poet with forms to sign. He plays them with a courtesy that never tips into caricature, and he is rarely let out of the uniform.

In All Quiet on the Western Front (2022), while the boys are dying in the mud, Devid Striesow's General Friedrichs sits in a château, eats well and talks about honour. He does not shout and he does not sneer. He behaves like a man who has never once wondered whether the food will arrive, and that is what makes the scenes work and what makes them a problem, because Remarque's book insisted that nobody in particular did this and Edward Berger's film hands us a man who did. Four years on, in Paweł Pawlikowski's Fatherland (2026), he is Johannes R. Becher, the poet sent to court Thomas Mann for the East, and the dinner table has become a desk. Becher is all warmth and paperwork. It is a small part and Striesow makes it feel like a whole ministry.

That is the thing he does. He makes power look comfortable, the sort of authority that offers you a chair, and he has been asked to do it more often than a career ought to allow. He trained at the Ernst Busch Academy in Berlin, graduating in 1999 after an earlier spell studying jazz guitar, and was soon in uniform: Feldwebel Tornow in Downfall (2004), Heinrich Vogler in Before the Fall (2004), the SS officer Friedrich Herzog in The Counterfeiters (2007). The same year he had a lead for Christian Petzold in Yella, and from 2013 to 2019 he was a Tatort detective, a character the press was cool about at first and viewers grew fond of. The largest break from the pattern is I'm Off Then (2015), in which he plays the comedian Hape Kerkeling walking the Camino, after his own research on the route. We have not reviewed it and will not pretend to. But a man so often cast as the polite face of the state can evidently carry a comedy about a pilgrimage, which suggests the casting has been lazier than the actor.

What works is the courtesy. Berger needed a clock and a villain, and Striesow gives him one without a single line that could be quoted as villainy. We disliked Friedrichs with a heat that surprised us, and the credit is Striesow's: he plays the man not as a monster but as a host, and a host is far easier to hate than a monster, because you can imagine being his guest. What does not work is not his fault. In Fatherland he is one of a gallery of people who stayed and managed, alongside Joachim Meyerhoff's Gustaf Gründgens, and none of them is allowed to run long enough to become a relationship. Becher gets his warmth, his forms and his exit.

So the thing we have not yet seen from Striesow, in anything we have reviewed, is time. International audiences have now met him twice and both times he was gone inside a quarter of an hour, having done exactly what was asked and a little more. Someone should give him the second hour and see what he does when the chair he is offering is his own.
