Fi1m perspective

For most of his career Eric Dane was hired for his jaw and played men who knew what it was worth. Late on, in Euphoria, he turned that ease inside out and played a man hiding behind it.

Cal Jacobs, in Euphoria (2019), is a man who has been handsome for a long time and has learned what it buys. Eric Dane plays him with the smile of somebody who expects to be liked, and lets it slip only when he thinks nobody is watching. His son Nate, played by Jacob Elordi, is a quarterback wound tight enough to snap; Dane's job is to show where that came from, and he does it mostly by being pleasant. We found Cal harder to sit with than Nate, because Elordi's menace is out in the open and Dane keeps his behind a face that had spent two decades on network television being agreeable.

That face was the career. He moved to Los Angeles in 1993 and worked through small television parts, then recurring ones on Charmed and Gideon's Crossing, before Grey's Anatomy made him a lead in 2005 as Mark Sloan, the plastic surgeon nicknamed McSteamy. He stayed until 2012 and came back in 2021. The Last Ship (2014–2018) put him on the bridge as Captain Tom Chandler and asked him to be steady for four years, which he was. Films were occasional: Multiple Man in X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), and not much else for a long while.

The criticism that followed him through those years was fair. The parts asked for a jaw and a bedside manner and not much behind them, and he supplied exactly that. It took Sam Levinson to notice that a man who has been looked at for twenty years might be good at hiding. Dane plays Cal as a man with something to keep shut, and he plays the effort rather than the secret. He said afterwards: "I never considered myself an artist until I started making Euphoria. That’s when I gave myself the allowance to feel like I was an artist." On the evidence, he had reason to. The show around him keeps mistaking shock for insight; he does not.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die (2024) shows what happened when nobody gave him anything to hide. His McGrath is the sort of villain who explains himself to the nearest camera, and Dane, who had just spent several years being interesting by withholding, is left delivering plot. The fault is the script's, but it is a reminder of how narrow the offer was for most of his working life. He died in February 2026. The parts that asked something of him came late, and there were too few of them.
