Fi1m perspective

Sydney Sweeney can make a polite smile look like hard work. We rate her most when she has something to conceal or resist, though too many leading roles have left her with little to do beyond looking wary.

In Reality (2023), Sydney Sweeney keeps offering a small, helpful smile as the questions become harder to answer. Paul Yee shoots her close, letting a change in her eyes or the set of her mouth carry what another film might put into a speech. Of the performances we have reviewed, her work for Tina Satter is the strongest, helped by Josh Hamilton's persistent friendliness. We felt uneasy in that bare room because neither actor needed to raise their voice. Sweeney makes the effort of staying agreeable visible without announcing it.

Television gave her the vulnerable Cassie Howard in Euphoria (2019) and the cynical Olivia Mossbacher in The White Lotus (2021). The shift to film leads and producing from 2023 has brought mixed results, including Will Gluck's Anyone but You (2023). Her Bea does not know what she wants, and Sweeney's guardedness sometimes becomes blankness. With Glen Powell, she is more convincing in their quiet moments together than when the script insists they shout insults at each other. We liked their company, but the comedy needed better jokes.

Michael Mohan's Immaculate (2024) makes better use of her willingness to commit, even when the material is familiar. As Sister Cecilia, she plays religious faith without a knowing wink, which makes the convent's early kindness feel increasingly oppressive. Sweeney also produces, and she commits fully when the last act finally demands more of her. It is worth seeing for that performance, with the considerable caveat that the preceding hour is much the convent horror we expected.

Paul Feig's The Housemaid (2025) again leaves her waiting as Millie Calloway, a live-in employee wary of arguing with anyone who can sack her. Sweeney is watchful and likeable, but Rebecca Sonnenshine's screenplay gives her little beyond being mistreated and noticing things for much of the first hour. In Madame Web (2024), the bickering with Isabela Merced and Celeste O'Connor offers brief relief from the plot explanations, without giving the young women much individuality. Better writing would help, but Bea's blankness is still a weakness in the performance. Start with Reality, where every small change in her face gives us something to watch.
