Fi1m perspective

Hayley Atwell makes quick thinking visible without making it look easy. We like her best when that intelligence comes with uncertainty, as it does in Grace’s first Mission: Impossible outing.

In Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (2023), Hayley Atwell’s Grace lies while visibly working out whether she can get away with it. She knows she is out of her depth, and Atwell lets that knowledge complicate every attempt to look in control. We like her best like this: clever, unsettled and trying not to show how much she is having to improvise. She and Cruise are funny together because her uncertainty gives his unchanging face something to work against.

Her early screen work included Brideshead Revisited (2008) and The Duchess (2008), establishing the period-drama side of her career. Peggy Carter in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) brought the franchise breakthrough, followed by the lead in Agent Carter (2015–2016). Her Martha in the Black Mirror episode ‘Be Right Back’ (2013) offered a different task, making the distress in a story about grief and technology convincing. Those parts suggest more possibilities than simply supplying a dependable colleague to the leading man.

Christopher McQuarrie gives Grace room to be a nuisance in Dead Reckoning Part One. Fraser Taggart’s daylight photography and Eddie Hamilton’s clear cutting make the Rome chase easy to follow, leaving us free to enjoy the pair’s predicament. We laughed out loud as the car misbehaved and Cruise’s expression barely shifted. The chase works as comedy without making Grace seem stupid. Jill Taylor’s clothes for Atwell look borrowed, a useful detail for a character whose confidence is never quite secure.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (2025) is the warning: Grace becomes a team member, and she is less entertaining than she was as a thief. We miss the uncertainty of being in her company. In Paddington in Peru (2024), her Madison is Henry Brown’s new boss, telling him he is too cautious. It is a small, functional assignment in a film that announces its characters’ problems and then tidily resolves them. For the better use of her, choose Dead Reckoning Part One and allow some patience for the briefings.
