Fi1m perspective

Jason Lee gives flawed men a dry, gravelly voice and the timing to make their failings funny. We value him most as an ensemble player, though My Name Is Earl makes a persuasive case for putting him at the centre.

Jason Lee's dry, gravelly voice is well suited to the flawed men he often plays. We like the precision of his comic timing, and how little a character needs to be admired before Lee can make him enjoyable. Playing Brodie Bruce in Mallrats (1995) began his association with director Kevin Smith. Chasing Amy (1997), in which he played Banky Edwards, further established the supporting comedy that remains a good reason to seek him out.

In Almost Famous (2000), he plays Jeff Bebe for Cameron Crowe, and the ensemble is a large part of why we recommend it. We warmed to the film's teenage enthusiasm because the performances make it convincing. Crowe is generous towards his characters, sometimes too generous when their behaviour needs a harder look. Lee's supporting place in the cast is part of the appeal: we like seeing him contribute to a group without having to carry the whole evening.

The move to television gave him the lead as Earl Hickey in My Name Is Earl (2005–2009), and showed he could sustain a comedy over several series. We would not mistake a preference for his supporting work for a rule about his abilities. His studio-comedy leads, including Stealing Harvard (2002), have been less reliable. The animated The Incredibles (2004), with Lee voicing Syndrome, offers a different use for his distinctive delivery. It is a sensible way to cast an actor whose voice is already doing so much of the work.

The Residence (2025) brought him back to prominent live-action television as Tripp Morgan after a break. Its White House mystery is lively, but eight episodes allow a crowded cast too many opportunities to interrupt the story. Uzo Aduba's detective provides the stronger reason to keep watching. We welcome the return without mistaking it for a recommendation of the programme's less reliable comedy. Start with Almost Famous for Lee; try The Residence when the detective is the attraction.
