Fi1m perspective

Jean-Hugues Anglade gives intense men a vulnerable side and supporting roles enough weight to matter. We rate his presence in Nikita, though its romance sometimes needs more time than the script allows.

In Nikita (1990), Jean-Hugues Anglade holds his own in an assassin thriller built around Anne Parillaud. As Marco, he is part of a supporting cast strong enough to make an impression despite Luc Besson’s emphatic styling. We value that presence, particularly in a film whose writing sometimes takes shortcuts. His strength is playing intense men whose vulnerability remains visible, though good casting cannot make an underwritten relationship wholly convincing.

His breakthrough lead was Henri in Patrice Chéreau’s L'Homme blessé (1983), establishing his screen presence early. Besson’s Subway (1985), in which he played Le Roller, and Jean-Jacques Beineix’s Betty Blue (1986), as Zorg, followed. Chéreau, Besson and Beineix were recurring collaborators. Zorg is one of the emotionally charged parts that explain his reputation, but we would not confine his appeal to leading roles or expect every performance to carry the same pressure.

Nikita is useful evidence of what he contributes when the film belongs to somebody else. We enjoyed watching him, because he has the presence to hold his own alongside Tchéky Karyo and Jeanne Moreau without the film having to depend entirely on Parillaud. That pleasure should not become an excuse for Besson’s shortcuts. The romance is meant to make the violence matter more, yet at times the script asks us to be moved before it has given the feeling time to develop. Anglade helps, but it would be unfair to credit him with solving a problem the writing leaves in place.

Charles IX in Queen Margot (1994), opposite Isabelle Adjani, is another emotionally charged part, this time in a supporting role. His subsequent work across French and international features, and television including Braquo, makes a simple account of him as an intense young lead inadequate. For a first encounter, Nikita is worth an evening for the company he keeps, with modest expectations of the romance.
