Fi1m perspective

John Lithgow makes geniality look suspicious and poor dialogue sound almost worth saying. We rate him for the precision behind the theatricality, though Cliffhanger lets us enjoy its villain without worrying much about him.

Tremblay smiles at everyone in Conclave (2024), and John Lithgow makes his lack of visible strain worth watching. Edward Berger's thriller sets out its candidates so that we recognise them quickly; Lithgow supplies the man who seems entirely comfortable with the occasion. That can be enough to put us on our guard. We like the economy here: the smile gives him something to do without requiring him to make every moment conspicuous.

The World According to Garp (1982) gave him Roberta Muldoon, played with sensitivity; Terms of Endearment (1983) followed with Sam Burns and nuanced dramatic work. These early parts deserve to be kept in mind alongside the comic and threatening characters. He began on stage, and can still play too broadly for the screen, but he has never needed to make every character large.

Size is part of the pleasure in Cliffhanger (1993), where Renny Harlin gets convincing danger from the mountains and Lithgow plays Qualen with relish. We enjoyed him because he made some poor lines worth hearing. We did not find him particularly frightening. The height and the climbing do more to make us anxious than the villain does, which is a real limit on the performance. Still, there is skill in keeping that dialogue entertaining when the screenplay has done so little to help.

The television turn brought Dick Solomon in 3rd Rock from the Sun (1996–2001), then Arthur Mitchell in Dexter, which he joined in 2009. Comic timing and charm serve the first; the second uses his ability to make an apparently ordinary man unsettling. Even these extreme parts retain recognisable human feelings.

His later ensemble work includes Killers of the Flower Moon (2023), which we recommend, though Lily Gladstone is the actor who holds it together. Lithgow need not be the main attraction to be worth noticing. Start with Conclave for a clear view of his restraint: Berger gives him a recognisable type, and he makes that untroubled smile worth watching.
