Fi1m perspective

John Lurie makes a long pause funny without appearing to ask for a laugh. His restraint in Stranger Than Paradise rewards patience, though the determined cool sometimes leaves us wishing he would let a little more feeling show.

John Lurie’s Willie does not announce when something is funny. In Stranger Than Paradise (1984), he lets the pauses last, offering little encouragement to anyone hoping for a punchline. We laughed at the ensemble’s small responses because Lurie, Eszter Balint and Richard Edson leave us to notice them. Jim Jarmusch gives the actors time, and none of them tries to fill it with extra business. This is where Lurie’s restraint works: we begin paying closer attention to a man who offers few explanations.

His early acting work runs from Permanent Vacation (1980) to the lead in Stranger Than Paradise, then Jack in Jarmusch’s Down by Law (1986), alongside Tom Waits. The deadpan delivery and laconic outsiders became familiar features of his screen work. Supporting roles followed through the 1990s, while television gave him the chance to write and direct as well as appear.

In Stranger Than Paradise, his score does something the acting largely declines to do: it lets us hear how unsettled this drifting can feel. The music between encounters keeps the spareness from becoming monotonous, without requiring a speech to explain anybody. Jarmusch’s screenplay and Lurie’s music work well together because neither insists on telling us everything. There is a cost to the performances’ coolness, and we occasionally want more warmth from Willie and his companions. The score helps, but it cannot entirely remove that distance.

Fishing with John (1991), which he wrote, directed and starred in, takes his deadpan humour into a travel programme. Painting with John (2021–2023) brings art-making into that television work. The move makes sense for a performer whose humour benefits from time spent in his company, without much pressure to get to the next event. Start with Stranger Than Paradise; just do not expect Willie to make much effort to win us over.
