Fi1m perspective

Kevin McNally is the man beside the star: the quartermaster who knows the ship is doomed and sails anyway. Five films as Joshamee Gibbs turned a borrowed voice into the steadiest thing in the series; the rest is good, quiet supporting work.

Watch Joshamee Gibbs while Jack Sparrow is talking. He is not listening for the sense of it; he gave up on that some voyages ago. He is waiting for the plan to go wrong so that he can be the one who says so. McNally built the voice out of his Irish father, his Bristol mother and an impression of Robert Newton's Long John Silver, and the mix is the trick: it sounds like every pirate you have ever heard and like nobody in particular. Beside Johnny Depp's Sparrow and Geoffrey Rush's Barbossa, both playing to the gallery, he plays to the deck. Across five films, from The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) to the last of them in 2017, he is the crew's memory, superstitious, loyal and tired, and he almost never gets the good line.

The career before the ship is long and mostly quiet. He was on stage at Birmingham Repertory Theatre at 16, and his screen debut was Castor in I, Claudius (1976), a young man in rooms with Derek Jacobi in a series we count among the best television we have reviewed. Poldark followed in 1977, as Drake Carne, then two decades of steady British parts, and in the 1990s he wrote for television under the name Kevin Sperring with his partner Bernard Dempsey. Then, in his late forties, a pirate. Since Gibbs there has been Valkyrie (2008) as Carl-Friedrich Goerdeler, Bernard Ingham in The Crown (2016), and guest work in Doctor Who, Supernatural and Fleabag. In none of them is he the lead. In most of them he is the person you believe.

What he brings is a face that registers consequence. Casting directors have noticed, which is why the supporting parts keep coming and why they keep being the same part: the loyal one, the wary one, the man who has read the weather before anyone else. It works because he underplays in films that do not. It costs him because one role has swallowed the rest, and because the sensible man is the last person a script thinks to give a scene of his own. In On Stranger Tides (2011), a film we found long and no longer strange, we were relieved each time it cut back to Gibbs, because he is the only man aboard who behaves as though the sea might actually kill him. He is not the sort of actor a review of that film stops to mention. That is the trouble with being reliable.

Start with I, Claudius, where he is not long out of RADA and sharing a frame with Jacobi, and you will see what the pirate films have been spending. Then watch the first Pirates and listen to the accent. Someone should give him the part where the others wait for him to speak. We doubt they will, and we suspect he will turn up on time regardless.
