Ludacris is a quick, dry talker in ensembles. Crash (2005) gave him jokes and an argument on a Los Angeles street; the Fast & Furious films have given him seven outings as Tej, a mechanic turned hacker, and rarely a scene of his own.
Fi1m perspective
Anthony walks down a white street in Los Angeles and explains to his friend Peter why the two of them are the ones who ought to be frightened. He is right about enough of it to be funny, and that is the best writing Paul Haggis gives Ludacris in Crash (2005). The actor knows what to do with it: he gets the jokes, and he gets them without reaching. We laughed, and then felt the film's hand on our shoulder, because Haggis has built the scene so that the joke can be turned into a lesson, and we could see the turn coming before Anthony could.
That is the career in miniature. He began as a rapper and a radio DJ in Atlanta, made an acting debut in The Wash (2001), and was given his first real part by John Singleton as Tej Parker in 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003), a role that sat close to the public persona and did not ask him to leave it. Then came 2005 and two films in a year, Crash, written to put some distance between the actor and the name on the record sleeve, and Hustle & Flow, in which he played a rapper called Skinny Black. RocknRolla (2008), for Guy Ritchie, followed. He went back to the garage for Fast Five (2011) and has played Tej in seven of the films, through Fast X (2023), while the character was upgraded from mechanic to hacker to someone who can also throw a punch.
What he does well is talk. His timing in a crowd is quick and unforced, and the bickering with Tyrese Gibson's Roman, across seven films now, is a double act that works because neither man waits for the laugh. What the Fast films rarely do is give him a scene of his own. In Fast X Tej is in London with Roman, Ramsey and Han, one of three strands the script never gets back into a room, and somewhere in that strand we stopped following and were waiting for Jason Momoa to come back. That is not the actor's failure. It is what happens when a part is defined by its equipment.
He has said he tells the writers that if his character does not grow he would consider not being part of it. After seven appearances the growth is mostly in the hardware. If you want to see what he can do when a script hands him an argument, it is the stretch of Crash in which Anthony is allowed to be the smartest person on the street, before the film decides what he is for.
