Vin Diesel’s gravelly voice can make sparse dialogue count. We value his sincerity, particularly in voice roles, but Fast X finds his Dominic Toretto so solemn and immovable that little warmth gets through.
Fi1m perspective
In Fast X (2023), Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto is mostly still, speaking about family in a low voice. It is easy to see the appeal: he looks strong enough to protect people and sounds as though he considers it his duty. By this point, though, the delivery has become so fixed that affection barely gets through. We were frustrated by his performance here, because those repeated assurances of devotion never supplied the warmth we wanted.
Before the franchises, there was Private Caparzo in Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan (1998). Diesel then moved into leading action parts with Pitch Black (2000), The Fast and the Furious (2001) and xXx (2002). In Pitch Black, his Riddick established the usefulness of a muscular actor who did not need much dialogue. As producer and star of the Fast & Furious series, he has stayed with a character built around loyalty. That commitment helps an ensemble hold together, but repeating it without variation leaves the actor with little to play.
Louis Leterrier’s Fast X makes the problem clearer through the performances around him. Jason Momoa is a pleasure as Dante, while Cena’s cheerful-uncle scenes supply the warmth Diesel’s declarations lack. Brian Tyler puts brass and drums under the engines, but only his quieter cues make much impression. Diesel’s stillness ought to offer similar relief. Instead, he seems stuck at the same pitch while the film splits into unfinished stories, giving him little help in making those family ties matter.
The voice work gives us a reason to resist writing him off. In The Iron Giant (1999) and as Groot, Diesel uses changes of inflection to put emotion into limited dialogue. James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023) is worth the patience its sagging middle requires, although the most affecting material belongs to Rocket rather than Groot. Those roles make good use of an actor who can sound sincere without needing many words, and suggest that more dialogue is not necessarily what he needs. Start with the voice performances if the Toretto speeches have worn out your patience.
