Fi1m perspective

Luke Wilson gives excitable comic ensembles someone believable to talk to. We like his dry humour and unforced sympathy, though thinly written supporting parts can leave him with too little to do.

In Bottle Rocket (1996), Luke Wilson’s Anthony Adams supplies the quiet response to Dignan’s busy criminal planning. Owen Wilson gives Dignan a touching need to be taken seriously, and Luke makes it plausible that somebody would keep accommodating him. We like the lack of fuss in that performance. The two men do not have to be equally keen on the plan for us to believe they belong together.

The bookstore robbery made us laugh, then feel protective of the men attempting it, because they have committed themselves to something they plainly cannot manage. Wes Anderson, who wrote the film with Owen, lets the friendships supply much of the suspense. Luke’s understatement suits that approach, though some of the leisurely episodes still try our patience. The writing also gives Robert Musgrave’s Bob less to work with than Anthony, leaving the third friend a little sketchy.

Anderson brought him back for Rushmore (1998) and The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), in which he plays Richie Tenenbaum. Legally Blonde (2001) put his straight-man qualities into mainstream romantic comedy. He also took the lead as Joe Bauers in Idiocracy (2006), as his work expanded across comedies and dramas. The recurring strength is his ability to make an ordinary person interesting without making the performance conspicuous. Our preference is still for the small negotiations between friends in Bottle Rocket.

Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 (2024) gives him less useful work. Wilson’s Matthew Van Weyden leads a wagon train, with comedy supplied by an English couple’s refusal to do their own chores. The joke is slight, and the strand sits among several stories that the film leaves unfinished. There is too little here to recommend the film for Wilson, though the underwritten material is the larger problem. For a proper introduction, choose Bottle Rocket and forgive it a little dawdling.
