Fi1m perspective

Meat Loaf used an imposing physical presence without leaving it to do all the work. We rate his attention to movement and mannerisms, particularly in Fight Club, though the many small parts leave some of his capabilities untested.

In Fight Club (1999), Meat Loaf wears a heavy prosthetic suit, but it is the care he takes with Robert Paulson's movement that matters. We found the performance unexpectedly moving because he makes that altered body feel like a person, not a costume. David Fincher's cruelly funny satire of male grievance benefits from an actor prepared to take a supporting character this seriously. The speeches can become tiresome; the physical work remains persuasive. We rate him as a supporting actor who took small parts seriously.

His screen debut was Eddie in The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), a role carried over from the stage. That early role can make the later film work look like a sideline, especially given the parallel singing career. Yet the supporting appearances continued through the 1990s and 2000s, with physically imposing or eccentric characters a recurring assignment. There is craft involved in keeping such assignments distinct. His attention to individual mannerisms and movement gave him something to do beyond arriving as Meat Loaf.

In Penelope Spheeris's Wayne's World (1992), he plays the venue bouncer Tiny. It is a comic supporting appearance in a film whose chief business belongs to Mike Myers and Dana Carvey, and it deserves to be judged at that scale. We like the brisk, amiable comedy around him, despite some lazy jokes, especially about women. The part makes straightforward use of his size and comic presence. He does not need to interrupt the comedy to justify being there.

The limitation is the size of the parts: cameos tell us little about what he might sustain over a whole film. A cameo with a vocal contribution to the soundtrack in Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny (2006) brings the singing and acting together, without changing that picture. There is no need to turn these credits into a case for a neglected leading man. Fincher gives us the clearest reason to look beyond the familiar name. For the acting, start with Fight Club; be prepared to forgive a speech or two.
