Fi1m perspective

Michael Byrne gives supporting parts a stern authority that makes him useful opposition for more expansive stars. We rate his economy, but the repeated military casting can leave too little difference between one role and the next.

Michael Byrne looks as though he expects to be obeyed, and his supporting roles often depend on that expectation. In Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), his Colonel Vogel supplies the stern opposition to Harrison Ford and Sean Connery’s funny, affectionate double act. We laughed at their father-and-son friction, and Byrne’s severity is a useful contrast to it. This is the work we value him for: giving the leading actors a credible antagonist without competing for their laughs. The adventure sometimes repeats familiar pleasures, but this is a good use of an actor whose authority needs little introduction.

The concentration of military parts in the 1970s established a pattern that the higher-profile international films of the 1980s and 1990s did little to break. A Bridge Too Far (1977) cast him as Lieutenant Colonel Giles Vandeleur; Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) had him as Admiral Kelly. Between them came Smythe in Braveheart (1995), another brief part built around the force a soldier can exert. These are useful jobs, and Byrne’s stern intensity makes the casting understandable. They also suggest the limitation: too often, the film wants the authority before it wants anything particular about the man exercising it.

Battlefield Earth (2000), in which he plays Parson Staffer, is a reminder that reliability in a supporting actor cannot make senseless plotting any less tiresome. Roger Christian’s science-fiction adventure is noisy and mostly dull, and its insistently tilted images only make the muddle harder to sit through. There is no reason to seek it out for Byrne, though nor is there much reason to make him answer for its failures. We would rather have seen more casting that asked something beyond sternness of him. For an evening’s evidence of why that sternness could still be worth having, choose Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
