Fi1m perspective

Orlando Bloom gives adventure films physical assurance and a useful earnestness beside more extravagant performers. We like him in an ensemble; we are less convinced when a film leaves him to make an underwritten romance interesting.

Beside Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), Orlando Bloom has the less grateful job of taking the romance seriously. His Will Turner needs to matter while the more eccentric characters get the better lines. Bloom's straightforwardness is useful to Gore Verbinski's warm, funny adventure, but it cannot give the love story much interest. Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio leave him and Keira Knightley's Elizabeth Swann too little to work with. We grew impatient with the romance because each interruption took us away from characters the writers plainly enjoyed more.

His career makes more sense if we take that supporting work seriously. Legolas in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) was his breakthrough, with The Curse of the Black Pearl soon providing another major adventure ensemble. Archery and sword work give him something precise to do, and his physical commitment is an asset in these parts. Leading roles in Troy (2004) and Ridley Scott's Kingdom of Heaven (2005) put more weight on a quality his dramatic performances have often been criticised for lacking: emotional depth. He later returned to Legolas in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013) and took a television role in Carnival Row (2019–23).

Gran Turismo (2023) gives him a different kind of earnest believer: Danny Moore, the Nissan marketing man behind GT Academy. Neill Blomkamp's film is fond of Moore and presents the salesman as a visionary. There is room here for a persuasive supporting performance, but too little interest in questioning the sales pitch. Each return to the car company's importance makes Bloom's part feel more like promotional work, while David Harbour supplies the human interest. We cannot recommend the film merely because its races have speed and weight.

We are wary of blaming Bloom for material that gives him so little beyond a job or a romantic attachment. He has not always made those parts richer, but the practical value of a straight man beside more flamboyant players is easy to underrate. Verbinski gives that quality a better home than Blomkamp does. Start with The Curse of the Black Pearl, provided repeated swordfights will not try your patience.
