Fi1m perspective

Peter McRobbie makes authority seem ordinary, which can make it more unpleasant. We value his understated supporting work, especially when the respectable man he plays sees no reason to question his own decency.

In Furious (2026), Peter McRobbie and Hope Davis play the Eastons, a couple who take a good lawyer as reassurance that they have done nothing wrong. We found them unpleasantly familiar, because their confidence makes that confusion between legal protection and decency so easy to recognise. McRobbie’s restraint suits people who see no reason to examine themselves. He is part of the supporting cast that keeps this revenge thriller worth watching even as it runs two episodes too long.

That usefulness developed through small film parts in the early 1980s, including work with Woody Allen, and recurring television roles from the 1990s. McRobbie appeared in eight Allen films between 1983 and 2000; television gave him Judge Walter Bradley across the Law & Order franchise. Judges, priests, mayors and fathers recur in his casting. These are parts that need an actor to establish who has authority without stopping the scene to explain it.

In Big Night (1996), his Loan Officer belongs to a film whose chief pleasure, for us, is the friction between Stanley Tucci and Tony Shalhoub. William Oldroyd’s Eileen (2023) casts him as the Warden, putting him in authority again. Neither is a performance we would make the chief reason to watch: we warmly recommend the former, with reservations about its writing, and are less persuaded by the latter. His presence is welcome, but it cannot tell us whether the film around him will work.

The recurring Father Paul Lantom in Daredevil (2015) gives the familiar authority figure more time, across eleven episodes. His work also takes him into horror, as Pop Pop in M. Night Shyamalan’s The Visit (2015). We would welcome a larger role that did not simply require him to be in charge. Try Furious if a revenge thriller appeals and a little patience is available.
