Fi1m perspective

Peter Wight is the man at the edge of a Mike Leigh film who turns out to be carrying half its weight. He does ordinary British unhappiness, in a garden chair or behind a police desk, more truthfully than most actors manage a leading part.

Ken arrives at the barbecue in Another Year (2010) overweight and already drinking, and within a scene or two he is crying in a garden chair about a job he hates. Peter Wight plays none of it for pity. He lets Ken be embarrassing first and sad second, which is the order in which real people are embarrassing and sad. We laughed at him, and then wished we had not, because Wight had made it plain that Ken could hear the laugh too. The scene in which he tells Lesley Manville's Mary how he feels, and she tells him how she feels, is as painful a piece of comedy as Leigh has put on screen, and Wight is the one who has to take the blow and keep sitting there.

He has been in Leigh's company since Meantime (1983), and the five films they have made together are the spine of his screen career: Naked (1993), Vera Drake (2004), Another Year and Mr. Turner (2014) among them. Leigh's way of working suits him. Wight has said he learned his method from the theatre director Mike Alfreds, who built the world of a play and the character within it in the Stanislavski manner, and that Leigh does the same. In Naked he is Brian, and has a long improvised scene with David Thewlis's Johnny; the film belongs so completely to Thewlis that we did not single Wight out when we reviewed it. In Vera Drake he is the detective inspector, which points to the other half of his working life.

That half is uniforms. Casting directors look at Wight and see a policeman: in Atonement, in Shiner, as Nige in Early Doors. He has also done the rounds of the period dramas, Pride & Prejudice, Persuasion, Jane Eyre, in the sort of supporting part that comes with a name and a waistcoat. He is reliable in all of them and none of them is why you would remember him. Roy Porter in Edgar Wright's Hot Fuzz (2007) is the exception, a comic part he was handed and took.

What Wight does that others do not is stay ordinary under the camera. There is no tic, nothing he reaches for; Ken's misery is in how he holds the bottle and where he cannot look. The cost of working that way is a career of parts written as furniture, and a Leigh set is one of the few places in British film where the furniture is allowed to speak. He has gone on doing it, on television in The Crown and in films into 2025.

If you have only seen him as the officer taking a statement, watch the barbecue in Another Year. It lasts a few minutes, and it will change how you look at every policeman he has played since.
