Rebecca Hall is a fine, watchful actor whose precision suits women under pressure. We rate her highly, though her studio roles can leave that intelligence with little to do beyond looking concerned.
Fi1m perspective
In Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024), Rebecca Hall is given readouts to frown at. Her Ilene Andrews joins an expedition into Hollow Earth, but there is little for that watchful presence to do beyond helping the plot along. We were frustrated watching her because the film keeps asking for concern without giving her much to play. Hall can suggest someone taking the situation seriously; the script seems to think that is a sufficient part.
Christopher Nolan's The Prestige (2006) offers a better place to begin, though its central contest belongs to Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman. Hall plays Sarah in a thriller whose professional rivalry has a human cost, even when the explanations grow fussy. It was one of her breakthrough films, alongside Starter for 10 (2006). We recommend the film warmly, without pretending that its success is chiefly hers.
Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008) gives her another ensemble, as Vicky for Woody Allen; Christine (2016) puts her at the centre as news reporter Christine Chubbuck. The latter is a clearer example of her ability to make psychologically complicated characters credible. Her theatrical precision suits the intelligent, articulate women she is frequently asked to play. We value the care she brings to them, and want scripts that ask more of her than an attentive frown.
Passing (2021), her feature directing debut, adapted Nella Larsen's novel; the same year brought her first appearance as Ilene Andrews in Godzilla vs. Kong. That pairing makes it difficult to mistake the studio work for a simple change of direction. Hall has continued moving between independent dramas and larger productions, rather than settling permanently into either. We have no objection to the monsters, provided the humans get something worth saying.
In Adam Wingard's Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, editor Josh Schaeffer cuts away from the people as soon as he can, and we share his impatience. Hall's care cannot rescue scenes that exist to read out the plot. The writing gives her too little opportunity to be interesting, however attentively she approaches it. Start with The Prestige; for Hall in the lead, make Christine the next stop.
