Fi1m perspective

SJ Clarkson is a capable television director with a feel for characters under pressure and a weakness for over-insistent camerawork. We prefer her when the performances do the unsettling and the camera gives them room.

John Simm and Philip Glenister keep testing each other in Life on Mars (2006), and their friction is much of the pleasure. We were gripped by its time-travel mystery because the pair make its consequences felt. Clarkson was one of its directors, and the series is a good starting point for her work. The police stories and the arguments begin to repeat, but there is enough at stake between these two to make another encounter worthwhile.

Her move into American episodic television in the late 2000s led to a more substantial role in establishing how programmes looked. She helped shape the first two episodes of Jessica Jones (2015), then brought together four series with distinct visual identities in The Defenders (2017). Her habit of setting rules for colour, lenses and framing makes sense here: several characters should seem to occupy the same place. That is useful craft, provided the actors still have space to be different.

Sometimes she makes it harder to watch the actors. In Anatomy of a Scandal (2022), which she directed throughout its six episodes, canted angles and rapid cuts sometimes obscure the story and distract from performances. The point is easy to understand; the insistence becomes tiresome. Her feature debut as director and co-writer was Madame Web (2024), which received predominantly negative reviews.

Cape Fear (2026) needs a different caution: Clarkson is one of nine directors across ten episodes, so praise and blame cannot sensibly be assigned to her alone. Javier Bardem's Cady makes courtesy threatening, and Amy Adams matches him scene for scene. They give us a reason to stay with a series that stretches a short novel further than it can bear, though the performances cannot cure the padding. Start with Life on Mars; come to Cape Fear if Bardem and Adams are enough to keep you watching.
