Fi1m perspective

Steve Carell makes embarrassing men bearable by letting us see how badly they want to get things right. His patient, unshowy acting deserves better than scripts that expect his likeability to supply the story.

In Rooster (2026), Steve Carell’s Greg Russo tries to connect with his daughter Katie and makes an awkward business of it. Carell lets the wish to be a good father remain visible through the discomfort, without making Greg any less embarrassing. We warmed to him in these exchanges because his affection for Katie was so clear. Charly Clive gives him someone to work with rather than merely someone to be endearing at. Their rapport deserves more attention than the thinly written father-daughter story gives it.

That combination of awkwardness and vulnerability was central to his breakthrough in The Office (2005) and The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005), which he also co-wrote. He can play broad comedy without signalling that he knows better than the character. Dramatic roles followed alongside the comedies and voice work, with Foxcatcher (2014) making conspicuous use of physical and vocal transformation. The mannered stillness there can feel too deliberate, as though we are being asked to notice how carefully he is acting. His precise observation of ordinary behaviour is usually more persuasive.

Despicable Me 4 (2024) gives his Gru the gravelly courtesy and sudden flinches that still make the voice distinctive. What it seldom gives him is a choice worth playing: he spends much of the film reacting to whatever the script puts in front of him. The scattered sketches leave us waiting for the Minions rather than caring about Gru. The result is sometimes funny, but his familiar vocal habits cannot give those sketches a story.

In John Krasinski’s IF (2024), he voices Blue, a large purple creature whose appeal also owes much to the people building the image around him. Janusz Kamiński’s warm light makes the creatures belong in the flat, while Jess Gonchor gives their home rooms that change to suit whoever occupies them. Those are pleasures in a film short of jokes and unsure what to do with its imaginary friends. For a fuller account of Carell’s appeal, start with The 40-Year-Old Virgin, where the crude jokes come with a person worth caring about.
