Tom Holland makes Peter Parker's embarrassment as convincing as his agility. We rate him most when he lets the boy's uncertainty show, and his quieter work beyond the suit gives us reason to keep watching.
Fi1m perspective
Put Tom Holland's Peter Parker beside Doctor Strange in Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and the superhero gathering becomes briefly awkward. Peter has less dignity to protect than the older men, and Holland lets that show without making him foolish. We laughed at the encounter because he makes it feel like a young man misjudging an introduction, even with all that power on display. His comic timing gives a crowded film a useful pause.
His dance and gymnastics background explains some of the agility; The Impossible (2012), his film debut, also asked for emotional conviction. The breakthrough as Peter Parker in Captain America: Civil War (2016) and the solo lead in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) made youthful vulnerability an asset. Cherry (2021) and the television series The Crowded Room (2023) took him towards heavier drama. With Cherry, the limitation is that an edgier part can leave the same earnest, likeable manner in place.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) finds a better way forward by asking him to do less. Under Destin Daniel Cretton, Peter's solitary routine gives Holland room to hold a scene without rushing towards the next joke. Brett Pawlak keeps the city lights soft behind him, while Michael Giacchino reduces the familiar theme to a few piano notes. We were moved by the look on his face when a boy he has pulled out of the road runs off without a word.
The film cannot sustain that attention: guest stars and green screen make it longer and less interesting. Holland is better served by Zendaya, whose MJ notices him looking at her without offering the familiar warmth. Holland has to show Peter's longing without the help of their old rapport. Their scenes are worth the patience the larger production requires.
In Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey (2026), his Telemachus has been told all his life that he looks like someone else, and Holland lets the resentment remain unspoken. Those Ithaca scenes, with Anne Hathaway's Penelope managing a household under siege, are where the film works best. For Holland away from the suit, start here, provided you can forgive a slow middle.
