Fi1m perspective

Tony Hale makes discomfort physical: standing among other people can seem to cost him effort. We rate him most highly in ensembles that give his anxious characters room to develop, rather than a brief opportunity to look alarmed.

Buster Bluth looks as though being among his relatives requires more co-ordination than he can manage in Arrested Development (2003). Hale makes the awkwardness bodily, so that fitting in becomes funny before anyone needs to explain it. We laughed at how hard he makes it look merely to stand among these people. His precision keeps Buster worth watching even when the programme's complicated storytelling grows tiring.

The series gave Hale his breakthrough, and its ensemble remains the strongest case for him. Alongside Will Arnett's self-important Gob, his difficulty simply being present gives the family a different kind of absurdity. Michael Cera and Alia Shawkat's smaller reactions help keep those bigger performances in proportion. Hale can be conspicuous without making every scene about himself, an important skill in a comedy where there is plenty of competition.

Steven Soderbergh finds a smaller use for him as James Epstein in The Informant (2009). The supporting cast includes comedians playing straight, and Hale joins Tom Papa, Rick Overton and Allan Havey in getting a moment of open-mouthed disbelief. The restraint works, though this is hardly a part to seek out for Hale alone. His usefulness here is knowing how much a brief reaction can do.

Gary Walsh, the devoted personal aide in Veep (2012), gave him another sustained ensemble role, alongside Julia Louis-Dreyfus. His animation work includes Forky in Toy Story 4 (2019) and Fear in Inside Out 2 (2024). These parts fit a familiar pattern of anxious or hapless characters. There is a risk that casting him becomes a shortcut: the audience knows what sort of discomfort to expect before he starts.

Inside Out 2 shows the limitation, though the fault is not chiefly his. Kelsey Mann's sequel gives Hale's Fear and Liza Lapira's Disgust so little to do that the change of performers scarcely registers. We would not take that as evidence that he has exhausted this kind of character; the writing has barely made use of him. Start with Arrested Development, accepting that the storytelling can wear you down before the performances do.
