Born in Glasgow, she began her career as wardrobe mistress at the Citizens Theatre in the Gorbals from 1978, later studying costume design at Wimbledon College of Arts. She worked on the third series of The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles before joining Lucasfilm.

From 1997 she served as head of the costume department at Lucasfilm, designing the costumes for the Star Wars prequel trilogy, including the elaborate wardrobe of Padmé Amidala.
