Fi1m perspective

A child actor who grew up inside one horror franchise and came back to it as an adult lead. Ty Simpkins's gift is stillness, holding a frame without doing much, and so far the films around him have asked for little else.

In Insidious: The Red Door (2023), Dalton Lambert sits in a car beside his father and says almost nothing. Patrick Wilson, directing for the first time, lets Simpkins hold long stretches of screen without a line, and the awkwardness of a father and son who have run out of things to say is the best thing in the film. It is also the thing Simpkins does. He does not fidget or plead or play to the camera; he waits, and the waiting reads as a young man who has had something taken out of his head and cannot say what.

He began as an infant on daytime soaps and was in War of the Worlds (2005) and Little Children (2006) before he could have read the scripts. The part that fixed him in people's minds was Dalton in Insidious (2011) and Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013). Then came the franchises: Harley Keener opposite Robert Downey Jr in Iron Man 3 (2013), a part he returned to in Avengers: Endgame (2019), and Gray, the younger nephew, in Jurassic World (2015). The Whale (2022) gave him an adult dramatic part, and The Red Door his first lead.

The blockbusters are not much use as evidence. In Jurassic World Gray and his brother carry a subplot about their parents that the film raises twice and drops, and Simpkins is asked mainly to look frightened in the right direction. The Iron Man 3 scenes are where people tend to notice his comic timing against Downey, and they are the one place in the big films where he is allowed to be quick rather than scared. For most of his working life he has been the boy the plot happens to.

Which is why The Red Door matters more than its score suggests. We were surprised at how much the father and son scenes got to us, in a car and in a dormitory corridor, given how tired the rest of the film is. The reason is simple: Wilson and Simpkins have played these two men across four films, and the fatigue between them looks lived rather than acted. Wilson plays Josh as a man losing the thread of his own sentences; Simpkins plays Dalton as someone who stopped listening years ago and is only now wondering why. Around them the film is red light and a violin.

The nearest thing to a criticism of his early years is that he was only ever scared or creepy, and it is fair. The stillness that serves him in The Red Door could become a limit if it is all anyone wants. Wilson, four films in, plainly trusts him. Someone else should now cast him in a film where nothing at all is trying to get into his head, and see what he does with the quiet.
