Fi1m perspective

Benicio del Toro can show us a man realising he is in trouble with a slow blink. We rate his restraint highly, and his quiet comedy deserves as much attention as his menace.

In the Tijuana car park in Traffic (2000), Benicio del Toro's policeman Javier Rodriguez understands the danger while someone else is still explaining the job. His face lets us follow his thinking without giving anything away to the men beside him. We felt a jolt of worry for him because he grasps his predicament before the conversation has caught up. Steven Soderbergh gives him room to do this without a speech. It is the performance we would start with.

His breakthrough as Fenster in The Usual Suspects (1995) made the odd delivery harder to miss. Bryan Singer's police line-up gives him four other men to play against, and his peculiar contributions help make their exchanges funny. The drawback is that the mumble can make the words hard to catch. By Traffic, the small facial movements are doing more of the work: we can see what Javier dare not say, and the danger feels immediate.

Soderbergh remains the director who makes the fullest use of that patience. In Che: Part One (2008), del Toro plays Guevara as someone whose decisions have already been made, keeping his voice low as he teaches a fighter to read or tends the wounded. It is disciplined acting, though we learn little about what the man wants for himself. Che: Part Two (2008) gives even more of the performance to listening, and del Toro stays worth watching through a middle stretch that does not always justify its length.

That restraint is a choice, as No Sudden Move (2021) makes usefully clear. His Ronald Russo is loose, talkative and rather pleased with himself beside Don Cheadle's watchful Curt Goynes. Their conversations in cars, testing how far they can trust each other, are more absorbing than the film's explanations of its criminal business. Soderbergh gets a different rhythm from him here, with Cheadle's stillness giving the chatter something to work against.

Comedy makes good use of that patience too. In Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another (2025), his karate teacher Sergio gets the biggest laughs by staying calm. Wes Anderson gives him whole paragraphs as the industrialist Zsa-zsa Korda in The Phoenician Scheme (2025), which del Toro delivers with patient weight and no apparent vanity. Mia Threapleton's watchful Liesl holds her own against him, but their work cannot make every business meeting interesting. Start with Sergio if the evening needs a laugh.
