Fi1m perspective

Bradley Whitford makes quick-thinking men sound capable and slightly wearing, and we like him most when he lets both qualities show. The West Wing remains our recommendation, for the humour and warmth beneath the verbal hurry.

In The West Wing (1999), Bradley Whitford plays Josh Lyman as a man whose quickness is useful and occasionally tiring. We found Josh funny because Whitford lets his speed wear on us without making us want him to leave. He is good at delivering rapid dialogue without smoothing away the effort of dealing with the person speaking it. That makes him valuable in a series which could otherwise leave us admiring everybody's cleverness from a distance.

Aaron Sorkin's series was the defining break, and its ensemble remains the strongest reason to return to it. Alongside Martin Sheen's Josiah Bartlet, John Spencer's Leo McGarry and Richard Schiff's Toby Ziegler, Whitford helps make working relationships apparent without explanatory speeches. These people sound as though they have spent time together. The writing can become pleased with its own eloquence, but the actors give even the earnest passages warmth. Whitford's ability to fit into that company matters as much as his delivery of a fast line.

The later supporting roles in horror make sense for an actor so often cast as articulate men with authority. Steve Hadley in The Cabin in the Woods (2012) and Dean Armitage in Get Out (2017) take him beyond the workplace drama. Jordan Peele's Get Out makes particularly good use of the suspicion that an agreeable man may be less agreeable than he sounds. Commander Joseph Lawrence in The Handmaid’s Tale, a role he began in 2018, continues the interest in compromised authority. The risk is that we start looking for the complication before Whitford has had much chance to suggest it.

The Diplomat (2023), in which he plays Todd Penn and reunites with Allison Janney, brings him back to an ensemble built around difficult professional relationships. We recommend the series chiefly for Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell's prickly exchanges, without claiming it as an essential Whitford performance. His familiar casting can narrow what we expect from him, even when the performance does not deserve that restriction. Start with The West Wing, where he has room to be irritating, funny and worth listening to.
