Fi1m perspective

Bryan Cranston's precision makes broad comedy funny and authority convincing. We rate him highly, but he needs time with a character; a brief appearance by an important-looking man is rarely enough.

In Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair (2026), Cranston's Hal makes the family's inability to behave look physically exhausting. We laughed because he makes the effort so visible and so ridiculous. Jane Kaczmarek's Lois gives him a formidable partner, and together they make the affection credible even when the family is wearing us out. The reunion is crowded and Malcolm explains himself too much, but these two give us a reason to return.

The move from Hal in Malcolm in the Middle (2000–2006) to Walter White in Breaking Bad (2008–2013) changed his standing from familiar sitcom actor to star. It should not make us treat the comedy as an apprenticeship. Both parts draw on precise physical and vocal work, even if one invites us to laugh much more readily. The stage leads and screen supporting roles that followed have offered different amounts of space for that care.

Wes Anderson has found a use for his authority, though we are not always grateful for it. In Asteroid City (2023), his television host introduces the play and steps in to explain what we are watching, adding to an already slow middle stretch. The basketball negotiation with Tom Hanks in The Phoenician Scheme (2025) is funnier, but Barney Pilling's brisk cutting moves the partners on before they become people. Cranston fits Anderson's ensembles; neither film gives us much time with him.

The smaller parts elsewhere are less rewarding. Matthew Vaughn's Argylle (2024) brings Cranston in when the plot needs him and dismisses him when it does not. As the voice of Li in Kung Fu Panda 4 (2024), he joins James Hong's Mr Ping in a repetitive double act of anxious and gung-ho fatherhood. Christopher Knights cuts so quickly that the jokes barely have time to settle, let alone the feelings underneath them.

Cranston's willingness to play broadly is not always an advantage: Everything's Going to Be Great (2025) takes it towards kitsch. He needs material that gives the exaggeration a purpose, and colleagues who can push back. That is part of what makes Kaczmarek such a useful partner. If another reunion is proposed, we would ask for less explaining from Malcolm and more time for his parents.
