Christian Slater’s rasp makes a line sound as though it might contain a threat or a joke. We like him when scripts use that uncertainty; thin supporting parts leave too much of the work to his voice.
Fi1m perspective
The rasp is the first thing we notice with Slater. It suits the rebellious outsiders who helped establish him, making charm sound a little suspect. His breakthrough in Heathers (1989), as the sociopathic teenager J.D., gave that voice a character substantial enough to justify the attention. We like him most when the writing gives us a reason to keep listening.
The studio leads of the 1990s included Clarence Worley in True Romance (1993), scripted by Quentin Tarantino. In Neil Jordan’s Interview with the Vampire (1994), he plays Malloy. The performances we recommend that film for, however, are Tom Cruise’s and Kirsten Dunst’s. Cruise’s malicious wit and Dunst’s forceful presence help make the domestic quarrels compelling, though the repeated remorse tests our patience.
After a period of uneven film choices, the title role in Mr. Robot (2015–2019) brought renewed acclaim. Creator and director Sam Esmail is a significant collaborator in this later phase, and Slater’s vocal performance is one of the series’ strengths. His move towards supporting and mentor roles on television offers useful possibilities for an actor with such a distinctive delivery, although we still want the writing to give him more than a position of authority.
Zoë Kravitz’s Blink Twice (2024) shows the risk: his Vic belongs to the billionaire’s circle, but the script scarcely gets to know him. We were frustrated by how little he was given to do, because Vic remains a type with barely a line to make him a person. Slater and Simon Rex do what they can, and Kravitz’s careful first-hour trap is worth seeing despite the film’s later shortcomings. The rich men’s therapeutic language is funny, but it cannot compensate for giving these supporting actors so little to play. Start with Heathers or Mr. Robot if Slater is the reason for watching.
