Dustin Hoffman makes correction and complaint surprisingly good company. We rate the precision of his comic acting, and Tuner gives it a useful job: turning an old mentor's grumbling into a reason to stay with a familiar story.
Fi1m perspective
In Tuner (2026), Harry Horowitz complains about the customers and corrects Niki, the younger piano tuner he works with. Hoffman has the good lines, but knows how to deliver them without making every exchange seem arranged for his benefit. His timing gives the grumbling variety, so Harry remains enjoyable company even when he is busy finding fault. We laughed at his complaints about Niki because Hoffman's pleasure in a well-placed line is so apparent. Daniel Roher's heist film needs that human interest: its route from tuning pianos to opening safe locks is more original than the story built around it.
The early move from Benjamin Braddock in The Graduate (1967) to Ratso Rizzo in Midnight Cowboy (1969) established an actor willing to follow a breakthrough with a less flattering physical transformation. The leading and character roles of the 1970s and 1980s included Ted Kramer in Kramer vs. Kramer (1979) and Raymond Babbitt in Rain Man (1988). His reputation for intensive preparation can make the career sound like a succession of difficult assignments. In Tuner, we are simply glad to hear what he will complain about next.
His move into animation from the 2000s made further use of the voice, notably as Shifu in the Kung Fu Panda films. Kung Fu Panda 4 (2024) is a useful caution against recommending a film simply because his name is attached. Its briskness and occasional laughs cannot make up for the feeling missing beneath the slapstick. The film passes pleasantly enough, which is a thin recommendation.
In Tuner, the contrast with Leo Woodall gives Hoffman's comic timing something to work against. Woodall plays Niki as physically braced against the next noise, careful to make his acute hearing a nuisance before it becomes an advantage. Beside him, Hoffman's readiness with a complaint gives their scenes a comic rhythm without asking Woodall to abandon that discomfort. Neither performance makes the heist plot less familiar, but both make that easier to forgive. Start there if a well-acted heist film sounds like sufficient reward.
